5 Pennies - Day 176

Happy New Year!!!

1. Picked up trash while walking with dog
New year, new day, cleaner neighborhood :-)

2. Text co-workers in wishing them a Happy New Year
Just wanted to spread the cheer around - also to the people that I work with. They are like my second family. I've missed them very much during this winter break. Yes, even the kids. I miss them too.

3. Text a woman from church in wishing her safe travels
This is a very nice woman that often takes care of my son because she just loves him so much. Anyway, she rarely leaves town or takes any type of vacation. So when she told me that she was going to go to New York during the winter break to visit some extended family members, I was very surprised. I texted her that I hope that she is having a nice time & to be safe in traveling home tomorrow.

4. Swept elderly neighbor's side walk
She's a nice woman that lives next door, but lately she hasn't been feeling all that well. I just wanted to do something nice for her. I know how much she likes to have her yard cleaned up & her sidewalks clear of any snow or dirt. So that is what I did. I grabbed a broom and spent about 20 min. sweeping her sidewalks in the very cold. The warm cup of coffee never tasted so better this morning.

5. Washed my mother's jeep
My jeep desperately needed a good scrub today. So this afternoon I took it out and gave it a good wash. When I returned home, I noticed that my mother's jeep needed a scrub just as much as my own jeep did. So I then took her keys & jeep and did just that. This is the problem with OCD people, when we start really cleaning something - we just can't stop - everything needs to just as clean then.

5 Pennies - Day 175

Happy New Year's Eve Day!
(I hope that this makes sense.)

1. Sent ecards to various friends & coworkers withing them a Happy New Year
This date always makes me a little sad. Saying good bye to things & people have always been hard for me. Yes, I know that it is just a date & a year is just a year - but there are all of the memories that the ending of the year makes you think about. Like all of the things that were left undone or left unsaid. But then this date is always nice too - like thinking about all of the things that did go well & got accomplished. Tomorrow is a fresh start - literally. I also worry about my friends & family being out and about on this night - some people just don't think before they drink/drive.

2. Moved the newspaper to the porch for a neighbor
So I was walking my dog and noticed that my neighbor's newspaper was dropped off at their fence than at the regular spot on their porch. It was an easy thing to do to reach over and toss the paper closer. That would save the neighbor a shorter walk in the cold to retrieve the news.

3. Re-hung up a fallen bird house
Again on my dog walking trip I noticed that another neighbor had a bird house hanging from their tree branch in their front yard. But last night's wind must have blown it down. Even though there are no birds around right now to brave the winter chill, it was still easy enough to pick up the item and rehung it.

4. Gave neighborhood dogs an extra New Year treat
So my dog will get the extra New Year's eve scraps. I also bought him some special 'party flavored' dog biscuits. I thought it was only fair for the other dogs in the neighborhood to get something special too.

5. Let people cross the street who were carrying heavy items
So the New Year's Eve dinner consist of some really good Chinese food. I rarely get a chance to eat the stuff because my son doesn't like it, so I always look forward to this special meal. Anyway, on my way driving back from picking up the food - I noticed that there were two people trying to cross the road. They must have been planning on going somewhere for a party because they were carrying various casseroles, drinks, & other party items. Needless to say that their hands were full. So I simply stopped in front of them and motioned them to pass. It was no big deal for me. I was returning home - they were getting ready to go. I hope that they got to their destination ok.

5 Pennies - Day 174

1. Wrote an email to a former student wishing them Happy Holidays
This student and their family was one of my most favorite students during my past ten years of teaching middle school music. It first started with me teaching his brother trombone - which I am now proud to say that he attained a full music scholarship to Arizona University. He is an amazing lad - loves to learn about music and extremely dedicated to his instrument. He is going to be an amazing performer. Then came along his younger brother, who started out on trumpet for me - but soon switched to french horn. He is also truly amazing. He is very good on his instruments, but what impresses me more is that he would often help the other students with ease comfortableness. He can also pick up any instrument and work with it for about 2 weeks and play it like he has been playing the instrument for the past 2 years. He is going to be an amazing teacher. And then there are the parents - who are just so supportive & caring. I really learned a lot from this entire family. Anyway, they moved to Arizona about a year ago and I miss them very much. They were like my extended family. Anyway, I try to send them an email from time to time to check in on how everyone is doing. This email was just to wish them Happy Holidays. Oh - the mother said that she misses the snow in Arizona!

2. Picked up trash while giving dog a walk
It's cold, it was a short walk, but still I picked up neighborhood trash - to keep everything clean.

3. Cleaned mother's carpet
Ok, so you know that you are OCD when you ask for a rug cleaner for Christmas & then you take your winter break by volunteering to clean other people's carpet because you enjoy the machine so much - seriously. Her carpets haven't been cleaned for years, so after I finished mine - I did hers too. It was a nice surprise for her when she came home from work.

4. Bought son's preschool class a teaching item
So I took my son to the local bookstore this afternoon trying to see if they had any good post Christmas deals - boy, did they! I got his class this giant floor puzzle that focuses on the human body, various important muscles, and the roles of important organs. It also had things that flipped up with interesting facts and extra items that Velcro to some of the puzzle pieces. Ok, I admit it we put it together when we got home - it was really cool. He loves puzzles & I hope that him/friends like it.

5. Bought another customer a cookie
So me & my son were about to leave the book store when I noticed that there was a guy just sitting in the lounge area looking at a magazine. My son must have seen him too because he looked at me and asked if we could buy him a cookie. Neither one of us knew him - so I love the fact that I have my son trained to do these nice gestures for others. I said of course. So I bought 2 cookies - one for my son since he came up with the plan and the other for the unknown customer. Since it was my son's idea - he had the honor of giving the cookie away and wishing the guy a Happy Holiday Season. Afterward, my son was smiling from ear to ear - he gets the feeling of doing something nice and good for someone else. I was very proud of him.

5 Pennies - Day 173

1. Picked up trash in parking lot of store
It was wet & cold from the light snow, but it didn't belong there in the parking lot. It belong in a trash can and so that is where I put it. Easy.

2. Gave tea packets to church staff
There are a couple of women at church that I know that do not like the taste of coffee, but prefer the flavored tea instead. So prior to worship service tonight, I went and bought a box of mixed tea packets for them to have - to warm them up now that the winter season has completely settled in.

3. Cleaned up some spilled soda on restaurant floor
Also prior to going to worship service tonight, I took my son out for a quick dinner. It was at a fast food place so that he could get his regular Wednesday night Happy Meal. Oh, if you are wondering - I only a flavored Iced Coffee. Anyway, while waiting for his order to finish processing, I noticed that there was some spilled soda on the floor by the one trash can. It wasn't a whole like but enough to make your shoe a little sticky. So I grabbed some napkins and easily cleaned it up. Again - easy.

4. Handed out Bibles at church and welcomed new visitors
Since it is the holiday season, we always get visitors joining our various services. They are really there to be with their families - but it is nice that they also want to worship in our area. So tonight there was an extended family of visitors at the service. I welcomed them with the service bulletin & made sure that they had their Bible for the passage reading. Nice family. Hope they come around again.

5. Put together a birthday present & card for band musician
It's nice to celebrate birthdays of others & his often gets overlooked/forgotten with it being in between Christmas and New Year's. Anyway, I got him a can of mixed nuts & a card that I had the rest of the band members to sign. After the service we sang "Happy Birthday" to him - it was like he was 4 years old again - well, he turned 59 but sometimes has the spirit of a young one.

5 Pennies - Day 172

1. Empathized with a morning coworker
I spent some extra time with a coworker today, just talking but mostly listening. She has been very upset lately over a recent death from a past student. She was very close to him and was one of the last people that actually talked to him before he tragically died in a car accident. She just needed an extra person to cry in front off without inhibitions, I was able to show that compassion.

2. Chased after an escaping cart
I've said it plenty of times before - I really believe that these grocery carts have minds of their own. This one in particular almost escaped with another lady's purse in the front. She was was trying to quickly unpack the cart into her car before the cold wind chilled her. As she lifted up the case of water, the cart believed that it had its chance escape & off it went - then off I went. The other lady was very appreciative that I retrieved her belongings.

3. Held the door open for a woman who was holding a sleeping child
The child just looked so peaceful. It was easy to help this mother. I've been in the same position with my son & have always appreciated any extra help.

4. Cleaned up a mess at a food court table
There was an abandoned table in the food court area today that had some spilled ketchup. The regular cleaners already had their hands full with sweeping up trash at other tables. I was easy just to get some napkins and clean this up for them.

5. Bought a random person a cookie
So after I was finished cleaning up the ketchup table, I noticed that there was this business guy working on his computer the entire time. I don't know what he was working on, but it was clearly visible that he was getting very frustrated. So I figured that he could use a mini-break by enjoying a chocolate chip cookie. And so I went and bough him a cookie, gave it to him, wished him a good day, and then moved along. He just sat there dumbfounded with what just happened. It was a cool moment.

5 Pennies - Day 171

1. Wrote a "Happy New Year" card to an anonymous person
So I decided earlier today just to get the phone book out and just write this card to whomever it opens up to. The essentially said to enjoy everyday and be kind to someone else. Side note - the person's last name started with an 'S'.

2. Made co-worker her favorite cheese cake
She celebrates her birthday in a few days and I just wanted to do something nice for her. Her favorite is chocolate cherry cheese cake and I have the perfect recipe for it. Happy Birthday!!

3. Bought friends flowers
So I met up with some of my teacher girl friends for lunch this afternoon. I wanted to treat them with something special - more than just 'Tis the season' sort of stuff. So bought a whole bundle of roses for them to share. Its nice to do this every so often.

4. Bought doggie treats for another co-worker
The one teacher friend treats her dogs like her kids - So while I bought some of my teacher friends extra presents for their kids, I about her a basket full of variety doggie treats to give to her kids.

5. Helped clean up other people's used plates at post Holiday Party
It was easy to do. To clean up after someone so that they can enjoy socializing with others.

5 Pennies - Day 170

1. Wiped down the handicapped carts at the grocery store
I normally wipe down the handles of the regular carts, but today I wanted to change it up some. Everyone deserves cleanliness - especially during this winter/sick season.

2. Moved boxes of left over Holiday Decorations
So at the grocery store this morning were bits and pieces of holiday decorations left on the one shelf, while 10 steps away was the remaining amount on a display table. I just moved the items over so that everything would be all together. Easy.

3. Threw away discarded coffee cups
As I was picking out my groceries, I began to notice that every so often I would find a small coffee cup on one of the shelves. So I just began to gather them up and throw them away - sort of like a weird scavenger hunt for cleanliness. Can you tell that my OCD has picked up lately?

4. Cleaned up other people's trash at party
So I was at a church post holiday party and easily picked up used plates & such for other people. Honestly, I was bored with the party & wanted to do something useful. I actually have a hard time just sitting still and talking to others, most of the time I feel like I need to be in movement and working. Besides, if it helps someone else - is this so wrong?

5. Sent a text thanking another person for finding son's favorite toy
So my son is in a batman phase and has this car/plane type of thing. He accidentally left it at the party and someone else found it. They saw my son play with it, so they called me to see if it was our. I told them that it was and that I would come back for it since I live near the party. Later on that night, I wanted to say an extra thank you -just a simple text to show my appreciation.

5 Pennies - Day 169

Merry Christmas!

1. Gave extra doggy treats to neighborhood dogs
So I got my own dog a box of these candy cane strips that I am using as treats to teach him to go out side to go to the bathroom - especially in the cold months - he is very stubborn. Anyway, on our morning walk I decided that I could give a couple of these treats away to the neighborhood dogs to wish them Happy Holidays - Elvis, the hound dog a few doors down, loved his. Don't worry, there was plenty in the box!

2. Took care of jackets, hats, & gloves of other children
We were out and about this afternoon visiting various relatives. The one stop that we made my brothers family was there (3 boys - I know - I'm satisfied with just one). Anyway the boys were running all over the place, some still half in outerwear. So as I 'wintered shed' my son, I helped the other boys with their clothes, and then put away all of the belongings. Simple to do.

3. Let others sit and eat ahead of me
So at another families house, there is this little table that everyone normally crowds around. Some people may say that it is 'cozy', but to a few of us it is uncomfortable because there is no elbow room and it feels like you are piled on top of someone. So I just hung back as this was starting and let others go sit & enjoy before I got my meal. Don't worry - there was plenty of food - even after I was done.

4. Sent Holiday E-Cards to various Veterans & Military personnel
This was extremely easy to do & I strongly recommend it to anyone. The e-cards are made by kids for our troops and with a few clicks of a button, they are sent all over the world. You don't have to know the military person or their address. The organization/website takes care of everything for you. Please visit:
http://www.letssaythanks.com/Home1280.html

5. Picked up trash in neighbors' yard
On my walk with my dog - its something simple & easy. There's something about Christmas that makes you want to have everything clean.

*So I read this article the other day that said that after Christmas, remember to continue to do kind deeds. I chuckled when they made the suggestions because it is common things that I have been doing in this project - letting other cars pull ahead, holding doors, giving your space up in line. It would be a nice world if everyone had a handful of pennies to give.

5 Pennies - Day 168

Happy Christmas Eve!

1. Made homemade candy for various local workers
So I made some more buckeyes for the workers at a local convenience store and a 'mom/pa' food shop. These workers are always at work and rarely ever take a day off. The 'mom/pa' shop owner was recently beaten up on his way to work about 3 months ago. He took a day off & that was all - even though he was badly bruised and had a broken arm. He was worried that if he took too much time off, then the local neighbors wouldn't get the groceries that they needed. I just had to give him a bag full of buckeyes. I made another bag full of buckeyes for the workers of a local convenience store because they are working late on Christmas Even night & early on Christmas Day. They deserves a lot of appreciation.

2. Wrote an "In Sympathy" card
I received a phone call earlier today that one of my former students was in fatal car accident just yesterday. It was a really bad phone call to get because the student was only 15 - died well before his time. Anyway, I just needed to send the family of this student a card in regards to sharing my prayers and letting them know that I enjoyed having him in class. His viewing is sometime next week. Sad, but the card provided me some closure.

3. Made cookies & hot chocolate for the mailman
So I left a Thermos of hot chocolate & a bag full of chocolate chip cookies by the mailbox today for the mailman. I really respect these type of service people. While I am sitting in my house & spending time with my son on a day off - they are still working. I just wanted to let him know that I care. Also left him a Holiday card wishing him a wonderful holiday season.

4. Gave a woman at church a 'Good Luck' item
So the woman at church who is in charge of the Children's Choir told me that next month she will be pursuing a Master's degree in Worship Education. I'm so proud of her. Such a great role model to her daughters that continuing education is important. So I got her some motivational pencils to wish her 'Good Luck.'

5. Sent various friends Holiday Cards
With the advancement of technology, I know that it would have been easier to send a text, make a phone call, post on a facebook, send an email, or other forms of communication - but I'm old school. I sent cards the old fashion way - through regular mail. Who doesn't like getting mail that isn't a bill or silly magazine - something thoughtful and heartwarming to brighten their day.

Friday, August 19, 2011

5 Pennies - Day 167

1. Wrote a "Congratulation" note to son's teacher
For some time, my son's preschool teacher has been working towards finishing her Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. I'm so proud of her because we have had several discussions about why getting this advance training is difficult, but extremely important. Most importantly, she found a sense of pride and self esteem through this process and accomplishment.

2. Let another customer go in front of me at the store
I wasn't in a hurry and just wanted to be nice towards someone else. Easy.

3. Gave up a closer parking space to another person
So I was at the toy store getting ready to pull into a really close parking spot, but something told me no and to park further away - and so I did. Even though it is the holiday time and close parking spots are hard to find in this shopping season, I just couldn't park there. I don't know really what it was, but just a gut feeling like that space wasn't for me, it needed to be used by someone else. So as I was walking into the store, I noticed that the close parking spot that I gave up was now taken by an elderly woman. Yes, this spot belonged to her.

4. Bagged another customer's groceries
Yes, I asked ahead of time. I remember the good old days of being trained on this skill. Now with everyone stocking up for the Holiday meals - an extra hand in bagging groceries is both helpful to the customer, but also to the other store workers - like the cashier and baggers.

5. Chased down a run away cart
This cart was bound and determine to break lose from the 'herd' and run off - aiming to plow into another car. So I chased it down. Really it was basically me running through a slight down hill parking lot with my hands flaring about. I knew what I was doing, but I'm pretty sure that I was giving the other customers a pretty good show.

5 Pennies - Day 166

1. Made a disc of music for another student
So this was an early Christmas present for a student that I have been mentoring at school the past couple of weeks. I know the style that he likes, so I picked similar songs and burned them to a cd for him. The great thing is that when I gave him the cd he then told me that he was passing his English & Language Arts class and found a good book to read over the break - So yeah! This was like a present for me too!

2. Got a custodians a card to celebrate the birth of a grandchild
She was so happy to share this news with everyone, that I was so happy to write a congrats card! She really is a nice person to have working at my school. Extremely friendly & hard working!

3. Gave another teacher a winter item
This particular teacher really likes the wintertime - it is her favorite season. In her classroom she has different knick-knacks with snow flakes & snowmen. Even her teaching stool has snowflakes on it. So when I saw this writing note pad with little snowflakes as a watermark design on it - I new exactly who needed this.

4. Wrote a "Thank You" note to another teacher
This particular teacher has spent the past couple of days filling out paperwork for various students to nominate them for different special community based awards. The kids that are being nominated are really fantastic kids, but I was really thankful that this teacher to the time. It was really thoughtful of him.

5. Helped another teacher look for a missing school item
This was a particularly expensive calculator that belonged her to math supervisor - so it was really important that we found it. After an hour of searching the entire school, we found it - in her teaching bag :-)
At least it was found!

5 Pennies - Day 165

1. Made homemade candy for step father's work
He wanted to treat the other crew members that he works with to an early Holiday candy surprise. So I was already making some homemade chocolate candies (Buckeyes) & Potato candy. I made some extra for him to share with his staff. They have been working overtime to get the new office building done before the middle of January.

2. Sent a friend birthday cards for their kids
This friend has been one of my oldest since middle school through college - such a great person. Well, she has two kids that were born a few days and two years about - but still around the holiday season - and no, she didn't purposely plan it this way. Anyway, I just wanted to sent them something to celebrate. The kids are so wonderful and she is doing such a great job with them.

3. Helped another person carry in shirts
So we have this wonderful parent that does such a great job in stitching up clothing with the school's insignia on the front. Anyway, she just finished a batch of shirts that she has been working on for various staff members for the past few weeks. As she was trying to fight to get through the front door, she was also trying not to spill/drop the box of shirts - bless her heart. It was like she was in a bear hug but the shirts had enough and wanted to pull away. So I went over and simply lifted the box out of her arms for her so she could get in from the cold. Since I had the box in my hands I walked it to the main office for her as she signed in. Simple

4. Wrote a "Thank You" note to the custodian for getting me heat
So in the winter time, the class that I teach band in is also the stage/auditorium - where I have no heat. I was so freezing cold that I had my winter jacket & gloves on while I was teaching because I just couldn't take it any more. This particular custodian saw me & took pity on my soul - she immediately called her supervisor to come out to the school to fix the air. Saying thank you was the least that I could do to show my appreciation!

5. Cleaned up spilled chips in the hallway
Accidentally someone dropped their open bag of Doritos in the hallway, where the another person must have accidentally stepped on them. So just to help the custodians from having the mess continue - I simply grabbed the hand broom & cleaned it up. It was simple to do.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

5 Pennies - Day 164

1. Brought in various Holiday presents for different staff members
So it is a few days before our Christmas/Winter break and I don't know who is looking forward to this more - the students or the staff? Anyway, I just wanted to get some small presents for various people that are really nice and wonderful - simple chocolate bars, homemade cookies, cards, etc. I really like the staff that I work with and just wanted to wish them a wonderful holiday season.

2. Picked up trash in the auditorium prior to tonight's concert
So the orchestra has this holiday/winter concert tonight and the auditorium was looking a little disheveled. During a break, I went out and picked up the various pieces of trash and straighten up the chairs so that it would look nice for the students and their families.

3. Tracked down a student to return materials to him
He left his math spiral notebook in the desk of my classroom. So after class I quickly caught up to him as he was walking to math and gave him his information. I just didn't want him to get into trouble in the next class. He's a really good kid - just a little forgetful every once and awhile. Aren't we all sometimes?

4. Returned a box of tissues in my room to another teacher
So I had another teacher in my room earlier today who was just watching the activities that my students were doing with the pianos. Apparently, she has a slight cold and brought her own box of tissues. However, she was suddenly asked to attend a meeting in the front office, but left the tissue box behind in my room. It was no big deal in returning this supply + plus with a piece of candy.

5. Picked up toys for another child at doctor's office
So I had to take my son back to the doctors this afternoon for a recheck. He has this STREP thing that is has been continuous and just when we think that we have it taken care of - a few days later it's back full stream. Anyway, the doctor's office always has some knick-knack of toys for the small kids to play with while they & their parents are waiting. Well, while we waited, I went around and gathered up the bits to put in the original container. Easy to do in order to help the other staff members.

5 Pennies - Day 163

1. Passed Bibles around at church
There were some new visitors at church this morning that needed some Bibles to follow along with the sermon. It was easy to get them this Book, as well as, some of the other worshipers who needed copies in the area that I was sitting.

2. Wrote a "Thank You" note to the person who organized a recent mission project
So the 'Mitten Tree' project ended today at church. The Christmas Tree never looked so beautiful because of all of the scarves, hats, gloves, ear muffs, & mittens. It really was bountiful to look at. All of the items will be given to a local elementary school for their needy families as an outreach project. The person who organized this activity really deserved more than just a simple "Thank You" card because he did such a great time. However, sometimes saying thank you just acknowledges the hard work that someone does.

3. Put away library books
So at the church that I attend, we have this little quaint library that the children are allowed to look through - although the majority of them just pick out movies. I often tell my son that he may check out a movie as long as he checks out 2 books - I figure that this is a good deal. There is also another section that is for teens and adults - even though the library church is basically used by the younger kids. So there was a big pile of books and videos that were returned but not checked in or put away. I had a spare 10 minutes and this was easy to do to keep everything circulating for the kids.

4. Helped another kid find his family after service
He was in the same Sunday School class as my son, but his parents were running late from their class. So us three just sat there and I let them tell me everything that they discussed about. After about ten minutes of waiting, his parents didn't show up - so we walked over to the main church area where his parents were talking to the Pastor. I didn't mind helping him because it gave them some extra time for fellowship.

5. Sent a text message to another teacher wishing her a "Happy Birthday"
She's a great teacher & has become a really good friend over the past couple of weeks. She has been looking forward to this day for awhile. There's something birthdays - regardless if you are 5 or 45 - that makes you feel special for that one day!

5 Pennies - Day 162

1. Wrote a Happy Holidays card to someone from church
So I recently learned that there is a particular member from church that has had Terminal Cancer for the past couple of months, but she really is nearing the end of her life in the matter of a few weeks. I really hope that she and her family gets to celebrate one last Holiday together, but I know that she is very sad about everything that is going on. So I just wanted to send her a Holiday card to cheer her and her family up. Sort of like a bittersweet card.

2. Gave my shopping cart to another customer
So I was at the grocery store today and noticed that there was another lady that was fighting to try to unlock two shopping carts from each other. It was like these carts were magnetized together and wouldn't let go. The funny part of the scene was that right beside the woman was another row of perfectly accessible shopping carts. She was like on a mission to separate these guys, even if it completely exhausted her from doing any further grocery shopping. So when I had my hand on the cart and started to pull away, I heard her mutter some colorful words to the shopping carts. Again, I believe that they have their own minds and we really are their puppets. By the look of her heavy breathing and disheveled hair - I just smiled and gave her my cart instead. It was a good show.

3. Bought extra snacks for son's Holiday party
So his school is hosting their annual Holiday party and he is desperately looking forward to it. Last year we didn't attend because it was held on a day that we were pummeled by 2 feet of snow - so this party must make up for last year too. Anyway, I wanted to contribute something because his teachers are just so wonderful. I bought some extra art crafts that the teacher requested. Enjoy!

4. Helped move chairs at a kids party
So my nephew had his 6th birthday party today. He is an interesting little guy and seems to be getting along better since he has gone to school - really starting to mature some for a young age. Anyway, there were some chairs already at the diner table, but not enough to accommodate all of the adults and kids that were present for the event. So I just started to shuffle things around until I had enough of what I needed to help everyone else. Easy to do.

5. Threw different amounts of pocket change on different door steps
So as I walked my dog this morning, I stopped off early to buy a cup of coffee because it was really cold outside. Wow, can't believe how cold December is getting - so quickly too! Anyway, I really didn't want to keep the pocket change - the metal kept making my hands colder when I would put them in their pockets. So I decided that this was a perfect time to throw different amounts of the pocket change onto the random doors steps of houses. Consider it the elf's early holiday present.

5 Pennies - Day 161

1. Brought in homemade cookies for secretaries
They have been so great in helping me with parents calling in about up coming concerts. Note to self - at the end of the year, ask for a phone for music office so that parents can directly call me there. This will relieve the secretaries of these extra conversations.

2. Brought in homemade cookies for the custodians
We had our very heavy snowfall late last night into this morning - enough to have a delayed schedule :-) The only tough part about this beautiful nature is that the custodians have to work twice as hard in preparing the school for opening. They do such a fabulous job everyday at our school, but getting the walk ways & parking lot ready is an extra process. I just wanted to treat them to something nice since that had to work extra for the benefit of others.

3. Gave up my lunch/plan time to help a student with an extra assignment
This particular student was working on an extra credit assignment for her science class that focused on how the frequency of sound moves through the air. She really emphasized in how there is the proven myth that enough of vibrations at a certain frequency can break glass. So we huddled around my computer in my classroom to look for information for this project. It was really interesting to read all of the information on this topic.

4. Held the door open for other staff members
They were helping in carrying out the baskets of food for the various needy families in the community. Easy to do.

5. Left some cars pull ahead of me
They were coming out of a drive thru and into a busy street full of traffic. I was approaching a red light, so I just motioned for about 3 of the waiting cars to go ahead of me. I was in no hurry and there wasn't that many people behind me. Again, easy to do.

5 Pennies - Day 160

1. Brought in the newspapers for another teacher
She was struggling enough in getting her badge out to enter the school while balancing the newspapers and her teacher stuff. So I quickly jumped in and offered to take the newspaper bundle into the school for her. It was easy to help - I was going in anyway and her classroom is real close to mine.

2. Held the door open for custodians
They were taking some excess things out of the school into the nearby dumpsters. There hands were full and could open the door, hold the door, and take the items out of the door. I was nearby and it was easy to just lend a hand.

3. Wrote a "Thank You" note to another teacher
This particular teacher has really stepped up this year in taking care of a lot of the PBIS (Positive Behavior Instructional Strategies) programs and activities. This is really her first year in doing this work and she is doing such a great job! I was really pleased in how well the Ice Cream Attendance event went yesterday - so I just wanted to send a simple thank you - oh, with a piece of candy too!

4. Brought in homemade candy for another teacher who was worried about a personal problem
I have started to become really close to this particular teacher and have recently learned that a family member of hers is really undergoing some serious health issues. She is normally very bright, happy, & bubbly - but lately you can tell that she has been carrying the stress of her family on her shoulders and in her face. I just wanted to do something nice to show her that I cared. And I know that she loves chocolate.

5. Made step father some afternoon coffee
He's been working over time lately in making sure that the roads are clear for his work & that the new building that he is the head construction manager passes all of the safety codes. He just deserves to be treated nice for all of the extra work.

5 Pennies - Day 159

1. Brought in homemade candy for the custodians
Just to thank them for helping me with getting the auditorium and nearby bathrooms ready for the previous nights band concert. They do so much for the school around concert time - many behind the scenes job that I am sure that I don't know the full extent. I really appreciate everything that they do.

2. Brought in cookies & snacks to band students
Just to congratulate them for a fantastic Holiday/Winter concert from the night before. I was so proud of them. I know that it is just 6th grade band students and it is a simple middle school concert, but I love those guys. But they worked really hard and they were so pleased with their own work. So in a way, it really didn't matter what I thought - they were proud of their own accomplishments. The chocolate chip cookies just added to their sweetness victory!

3. Helped to find particular students for an ice cream party
So one of the special activities that we are having at our school today was to congratulate those students who have been improving their attendance by rewarding them to go to a special ice cream party. Not all of the passes were given out in time prior to the first bell ringing, so I used my first period plan time to finish up passing out the passes to the students for the ice cream reward party.
Side note - the students enjoyed & it was a big hit for them! Who doesn't like an ice cream party? Oh wait, I'm lactose intolerant, I understand.

4. Copied paperwork for another teacher
She only had 5 minutes left before the end of her planning time, but she needed to make some copies for her next class and go to the bathroom. So I told her that I could easily make the copies to help her out, but I wasn't going to attempt the telekinetic bathroom visit!

5. Gave a money donation to a needy family
I had an extra 5 dollars that I was going to buy a cup of coffee with after school today, but new that the needy family foundation could use it more. I was happy to give!

5 Pennies - Day 158

1. Tracked down a student to give him his candy
This morning helper accidentally left the treat that I gave him in my room. He did such a great job at mall concert last night, that I just wanted to give him something extra because he seemed very tired this morning. I guess that in his sleepiness he left his candy behind in my classroom. That's ok, I tracked him down at his locker and regave him his candy. Although, I told him to wait until lunch to eat it.

2. Covered for another teacher so that she could take a much needed break
This particular teacher was getting overwhelmed with the behavioral students that she was working with. You could tell that she needed an extra break. I had a spare 5 minutes - just enough time for her to leave the room, go to the bathroom, get something to drink, and return with a calm new outlook. I was happy that I could provide this for her.

3. Gave my bottle of water to another workout member/teacher
She was coming from a meeting and quickly changed into her work out clothes just as we were starting. About half way through the program she realized that she forgotten her bottle of water that was sitting on her desk in her classroom on the other side of school. She didn't have time to go back and was really bummed that she left it. I try to always bring an extra bottle of water for this type of occasion. So I just gave her my extra. You would think that this water must have been golden they way she cherished it :-)

4. Wrote some "Thank You" notes to those staff members that came to the previous night's concert
Since this was at the mall in another city outside from where I teach, for some staff members this would have been a bit of a hike. However, I saw a couple of familiar face which was really nice because they were giving up their own time. I tried to personally thank every staff member for coming, but also thought that a special note with a piece of candy would be appropriate too. Everyone said that they enjoyed it greatly!!!

5. Wrote "Thank You" notes to the parents that helped me at tonight's concert
So tonight was the 6th grade band concert at the school. The kids were so excited and their families really enjoyed the evening. Me - I'm glad that things went well, but even happier that another concert is done and my plate is starting to get lighter again. I am especially thankful for those parents that helped me with various things such as collecting money, videotaping, monitoring the kids during warm up, and more. I really couldn't do this band teacher job without the support from my parents. They are great!

5 Pennies - Day 157

1. Brought in food for the school's canned food drive
So the guidance department were missing a couple of items for the different food baskets/boxes for the various community's families. It was easy to get them & bring them in - in order to complete each package.

2. Rehung holiday decorations that fell down
So on Friday afternoon, I saw the one gym teacher hanging some spirited decorations in her office. However, when I was using the shower in her office after working out this morning, I noticed that some of them have fallen down. It was easy to rehang these few items for this other teacher.

3. Brought laminated materials to another teacher
So I was starting to copy my concert program for tomorrow night in the teacher's workroom and noticed that there was some lamination done. As I further looked at the items, I knew that they belonged to the art teacher who has their room beside mine. So I decided that as I walked back to my room, I would drop these items off to her - save her a trip and all. Easy.

4. Listen to additional ensembles
So tonight some of my students performed at the local Valley Mall in town. They did such a great job and I was really proud of them. I had the opportunity to leave after my students were finished, but I stayed to hear the other ensembles from the other music teachers within my school. Overall, I was really pleased with how everything sounded. It was a good showcase from my school's music department. The students & their families were very happy. Good show!

5. Helped cleaned up after concert
Again, I had the opportunity to leave right after the last performance from my school's music department - trust me, I really wanted to - I was so exhausted! However, it was late for everyone including the mall staff that were mainly in charge of putting all of the chairs, stands, & sound equipment away. I figured that if I helped them too - then everyone would get done and go home quicker. Mission Accomplished :-)

5 Pennies - Day 156

1. Took in cookies and candies for Church Coffee Hour
It wasn't my turn to provide snacks for the after service social gathering, but I was in the mood from yesterday's party. I went home yesterday, stopping off at the supermarket and getting some cooking supplies, knowing that I was going to cook & bake extra treats just for church. As I baked, it felt good. Like I was using God's love as the extra special ingredient in all that I made - chocolate chip cookies, buckeyes, potato candy, cup cakes, etc. Everyone enjoyed them too!

2. Collected that trash from the food area after service
By doing this it helped the church's Care Giver out - which is good because he has been working extra hard lately since the snow and winter weather decided to start little earlier than normal. On top of that, he has been really helping in setting things up for the church's Holiday pageant for tonight, as well as, starring in it too! Yes a thespian. He such a great guy. Anything that I can do to help him out - considerate it done. Yes, I packed him a special container of cookies & candies too!

3. Helped an elderly woman get information about tonight's church performance
I'm not for sure if she was a grandparent of one of the kids, another member of the church that goes to a different service than I, or just a bystander that wanted some information. Either way, I was happy to help! I knew where the fliers were and enjoyed talking a little to her about how hard everyone has been working to put this program together.

4. Moved the larger trash cans to the dessert area prior to pageant beginning/ending
The organizers of the pageant did such a wonderful job in putting everything together. This one small detail was easy to fix & it was my honor to contribute something. Yes, it may have been a small task - but it helped clean everything up in such a big way.

5. Picked up a bottle that a baby dropped
She was being so good during the performance - this was easy to do!

5 Pennies - Day 155

1. Put back abandoned carts & baskets at the grocery store
They were there, they needed to be put back to their place, so I did - easy.

2. Bagged up another customer's groceries
Yes, I asked first and they were so grateful for the help. They had a little baby who really needed either a bottle, diaper change, or a nap. It was nice to help this parent out. I remember those days of being frazzled constantly - now it is only every 15 minutes :-)

3. Picked up trash that someone else threw down
I have explained in earlier pennies that I often pick up trash that has accidentally been left behind in various parking lots. Well this morning a little bit different in the penny. I was coming out of the grocery store and noticed that a customer deliberately took their receipt balled it up and threw it on the ground. They were about about 5 feet ahead of me - so when I got to this trash I picked it up and turned to the nearest trash can. The original owner of this trash then starts yelling at me that I was going through her personal belongings. I really wasn't - I was more appalled about her lack of caring for the environment and her laziness. However, I didn't want a confrontation over a slip of paper - so I quickly retreated to my Jeep and drove home. Before completely leaving the parking spot, I noticed in my rear view mirror the irate woman still yelling at me. Oh well.

4. Made special homemade candies for someone else's party
There was another teacher at school that was having a party at their home based on family holiday cookies/candies. Although I have been really tired lately in getting things ready for up coming holiday/winter concerts - I knew that I needed to go and bring something. It really meant a lot to this particular teacher. That's what friends do - support each other - and food helps too!

5. Bought son's class Holiday art supplies
His teacher is just so wonderful. I wanted to do something for him, her, & the class. It's just another opportunity to give everyone a special learning opportunity.

5 Pennies - Day 154

1. Gave another teacher her favorite morning snack
This particular teacher forgot to eat breakfast this morning and I over heard her comment about how hungry she was but it was hours away from lunch. I keep extra snacks in my room for when I feel my sugar drop too low and one of the snacks is a Special K chocolate bar, that this particular teacher likes. I felt good and not hungry so I gave my snack bar to this teacher as a pick me up. It worked :-)

2. Housed another student in my classroom to reprieve another teacher
Just by the look of this teacher you could tell that this student found every button and sledgehammering them. I felt so bad for the teacher because you could really see that she was trying, but the student was in a mood to be agitating and agreeing. So to give both the teacher and the student a break, I volunteered to take the student with me to my room to work alone. Both did much better away from each other.

3. Told a student that she looked very nice today
So this student normally wears jeans and a t-shirt to school everyday - but today. Today she wore a really pretty dress. It just made her look breathtaking. I told her that I wanted her to be my stylist - she thought I was joking, but really I wasn't.

4. Picked up trash in the cafeteria
Do my part to keep the school clean for others

5. Gathered trash from my classroom to help the new custodian
So we have a new custodian on the night shift starting today. He was still getting the lay of the 'land' in the music department. Since it was Friday and he was new, I collected my own trash and threw it away to help him.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

5 Pennies - Day 153

1. Complimented another teacher in how they looked
They had a really nice new sweater on - red - I guess she was feeling festive for the holiday spirit. Anyway, she looked really nice. It's nice to receive compliments - also nice to give too!

2. Helped set up the stage for another music ensemble rehearsal
So I normally have band class on the stage every day and lately I have been having full band rehearsal because my 6th grade group has a concert next week. Anyway, the orchestra students needed to have time to also rehearse on the stage. So I helped the orchestra teacher set up for his rehearsal as well as switch rooms with him so that my band classes could still occur.

3. Cleaned up the girl's bathroom
It took less than 1 minute to pick up the paper towels that were accidentally dropped on the floor. I also cleaned the bathroom up because this is the closest facility to the auditorium and there is a chorus concert there tonight. I just wanted it to be clean for everyone.

4. Let another car go ahead of me
I was waiting at a red stop light and noticed that there was a car who has been patiently waiting to make a left hand turn. So there was no one behind me and I just backed up a little - enough to let the person out and ahead of me.

5. Participated in a "Make-A-Wish" Foundation Holiday Activity
This was a cool little activity during lunch time today. If the students wanted to participated all they had to do was to write 'Santa' a letter and give a dollar to get it processed/mailed to the North Pole. So since this was a simple fundraiser and all of the proceeds go to this special foundation - I decided to write a couple of letters and donate around $5. Simple, but good & worthy.

5 Pennies - Day 152

1. Gave another teacher a funny item to cheer her up
This other teacher was really worried about her father and the recent illness that he has developed. I hate seeing people in distraught and being upset. So anything that I can do or say to cheer them up in a funny way - I'm on it. Besides, I have really started to become close to this particular staff member. She has done the same for me in the past couple of weeks.

2. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to an administrator
So I have been working on some special paperwork in nominating another teacher for a special spring county teacher award. This particular administrator has been so kind in giving up some of his time in finding specific information that I need in order to finish her paperwork. In addition, he has proof read the application and nominating questions/answers. It was the least that I could in writing him a thank you note for his extra time and patience. Oh, I also included some homemade goodies to show my appreciation.

3. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to another teacher for covering my class
Today's adventures brought on a student/parent/school meeting concerning special accommodations and modifications that were needed to be added to his regular classes. In a way this meeting was really good because I got to meet the parent, show them all of the wonderful things that he is doing in my class, and hear first hand who I can improve on in order to make learning for him more accessible. On the other hand, it was a bit intimidating because not all of the accommodations could be met within our school and you could sense the frustration from the parent. Either way, it was a meeting that I had to attend and another teacher was so helpful in taking care of my regularly scheduled class while I was away. A thank you note and a piece of candy was called for.

4. Wrote an encouraging note to another staff member
So this note went to the facilitator who ran this parent/student/school meeting. As much as I could sense the frustration of the parent trying to get all of the services that her son needed, I could also sense the frustration of this particular case worker in trying to explain what the school could provide. She looked exhausted at the end of the meeting - both physically and emotionally.

5. Helped organize information and folders for an after school meeting
This particular staff member looked very overwhelmed and I had some free time to spend. It was easy to help organize - this is where my OCD kicks in and is a benefit towards others - organizational skills.

Monday, August 8, 2011

5 Pennies - Day 151

1. Brought in extra clothes for a needy family at school
So as the winter season is starting to settle in where I live, this is the perfect time to do a little clothing shopping. As I have mentioned before - I am a horrible shopper when it comes to clothes. So if I am at it for around 3 hours and only find 2 shirts, hey- this is pretty good for me! Anyway, when I do get some clothes to look half decent and I buy them - I normally raid my closet and pull the items that I haven't worn in the past year. Most of the time I normally emerge from my closet with a heap of articles ready to donated to the local Salvation Army or similar center. However, this time our school was sponsoring a family who recently had a major house fire. I was glad to see my clothes going back into the community that I teach at.

2. Gave coupons for free drinks and meals to another teacher
Yes, I have mentioned this particular teacher and her side project in earlier pennies. So today I gave her more coupons & gift cards for this cause. Again, going back into my professional community.

3. Moved boxes for another staff member
I actually moved these boxes to the guidance area for them to use to start packing up the items from the last canned food drive. They start making deliveries next week and need boxes to put everything in order to take them to the various families within the community. Such a great cause. Again, going back into my professional community.

4. Cleaned up trash from an evening meeting
So I had my regular monthly meeting at the Board of Education building for the one leadership class that I am in this school year. I was exhausted prior to the meeting, but knew that I needed to go to this meeting in order to pass the course. By the looks of everyone - we were all exhausted - including the presenters/speakers. So by the end of the meeting we were all just helping each other so that everyone could get home quicker - go group effort!

5. Gave my candy treat away
So the presenters at the meeting tonight were very kind and gave everyone a little chocolate Santa candy. I particular don't eat candy or many sweets in order to keep track of my fitness/health goals. This time of the year is always hard because food & desserts are in an abundance! So if I don't have it around me, I don't crave it. Needless to say that as soon as I got this special treat, I knew that I needed to give it to someone else. Knowing how hard secretaries work, I knew instantly that this special treat of mine was going to go to her. Happy Holidays!

150 Days of Pennies Recap

So by my calculations- I have spent $7.50 of pennies & every penny was well worth it :-)

One thing that I have learned is that people like to be formally appreciated, regardless if it is in person, a card, a text, an email, etc. - people actually do like this. They like to know that they did a good job and someone is recognizing their efforts.

After this penny project is over, I need to make sure that I keep up with this activity personally. I personally like a simple note or card :-)

5 Pennies - Day 150

1. Helped another teacher bring materials for her students
She was treating her students with snacks & water since they did such a great job on their last assessment. I was by the door and it was easy to help.

2. Wrote "Have a Good Day" notes to the front office secretaries
With the different Holiday Concerts approaching, many of the music students (band, chorus, & orchestra) and their parents have been calling the schools asking for additional information. The secretaries really do a wonderful job in helping the parents get the information that they need. For my parents, I always give the secretaries the "parent letter" that I send home so they have the exact information that the parents. However, from time to time the parents get a creative in asking questions - so the secretaries do a great job in sending me info about returning a phone call or email. Just to say a simple thank you - within a note.

3. Sent a picture and idea for a social committee activity
The other day the person who heads the social committee within our school talked about doing some different activities with the staff on the various holidays & such. So over the weekend I saw this cute little activity to do with decorating 'stockings', each staff member would stuff with little pieces of chocolates & candy, and then the staff would vote on the most creative or best decorative. I sent her pictures of another group's activity so that she could see exactly what other people were doing.

4. Helped the custodians clean my room by gathering the trash
Concert season also means that the custodians have to prepare the auditorium in addition to the regular music classrooms. I just thought that it would be helpful to start taking care of my trash when I can so that it is one less thing for them to do.

5. Went to a co-worker's grandfather's viewing
I have started to get to know this particular staff member and noticed that she was really upset at the end of last week. When I asked her why she was upset she said that her grandfather just passed away. Having the same feelings for my own personal family loss, I felt the same way. Although I didn't know her grandfather, I went to the viewing tonight out of respect for her.

5 Pennies - Day 149

1. Cleaned and straighten up doctor's waiting room
Just a little house work at the pediatrician to help the other staff members there. They already do such a wonderful job with the patients, I can easily help with the small stuff.

2. Picked up trash in front of pharmacy
So I parked my Jeep in a spot off to the side of the local pharmacy and as I was walking in, I noticed various pieces of trash in the parking lot. So I just started to pick up the various piece, gathered them together, and placed them in the trash can outside of the entrance doors. Yes, I know that it may seem like a small thing - but keeping things clean does go a long way.

3. Picked up items that were accidentally knocked off the store shelf
So in the above penny I talked about how important it is to have a clean outside, but the inside is just as important. Things belong on a shelf and not on the floor. If you see something that has fallen, just take a few seconds to pick it back up. Again, I know that it may seem like a small thing - but keeping things clean does go a long way.

4. Helped another customer unpack their cart at the register
So prior to helping them, I asked them first if they would like some help. At first they said no, but then they wrestled with a big bag of dog food as I automatically held their cart. Then I soon started to hand them things from their cart for them to place on the grocery belt and soon started to place their items in line. Her cart got unpacked much quicker than expected and was able to move along with her day more efficiently - which was nice to give her some extra moments.

5. Got music ready for another church singer
So at church this morning, I noticed that a regular singer was running a little late. So to help her out, I simply went and prepared her music so that when she was able to arrive, everything was ready for her to jump in and sing. Simple to do.

5 Pennies - Day 148

1. Picked up trash on walk with dog
Just a regular thing with me and my dog now.

2. Used my birthday money to buy toys for needy children
So my father sent me some money last week in the mail for my birthday - sort of reminded me of being a kid and awaiting the mailman to find the birthday greetings in a card. Anyway, I really don't having anything thing that is really pressing in my life right now that I need or would like to have. So I decided that the best thing to do is to spend this extra on some toys for various needy kids within the community of my school. I believe that this was a better gift anyway.

3. Helped another child pick up some accidentally dropped food
So my son was invited to a special Advent party this morning at a friend's church. Every year they throw this shin-dig called a "Star" party and focus on how the star led Mary & Joseph to their unique home for Jesus' birth. They have all sorts of star related food and games, but the best part is the old school felt story board of the the nativity story - at least for me. Anyway, there was this little girl who tripped over her shoes while trying to throw away the reminiscent of her 'Star' pancake and these chunks of crumbs plus a river of syrup went everywhere. I just grabbed some portable wet wipes - What, you don't carry these? -  and handed them to her to clean herself while I scooped up the mess on the floor. Another person came in with a mop. Within 3 minutes of the accident everything was back to normal. Go team!

4. Cleaned up and threw away other people's trash
So as the kids were listening to the felt storyboard of the nativity scene - I decided to make myself useful and help clean up other people's trash from the various tables. Easy to do.

5. Wrote a 'Thank You' card to the organizers of this Holiday Party
It was really nice to be invited to this party because neither I nor my son are members of this congregation - but they still treated us with so much hospitality and kindness. A simple thank you was the least that I could provide.

5 Pennies - Day 147

So today must have been one of those days that I just wanted to write 'love notes' to others!

1. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to another teacher for providing an extra field trip
Sometimes learning outside of the classroom is just as important as learning within. This field trip was organized specially for a group of students that are certificate/job related bound. These students are amazing kids and the Holiday Baskets that they made were so wonderful. They are using this field trip to earn money to help sponsor a holiday party for their class. The particular teacher that works solely with these students is an amazing person because she really makes sure that these kids are learning the life skills that they need, while being extremely warm & caring towards them everyday. She has such a hard teaching schedule, but handles it with such an amazing amount of grace.

2. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to another teacher for helping with a field trip at the last minute
The assistant to this particular wasn't planning on going because she wasn't able to get someone to cover all of her teaching assignments. However, she was able to work things out at the last moment because she really wanted to be with these students and see them do well. She is such a great person that treats everyone with the loving discipline that any grandmother would.

3. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to a parent
This particular parent let me borrow a special music game - Michael Jackson dancing Wii game - so that I could use this with my students as a special activity. My music students are so funny sometimes. As much as they say that they don't like to dance and that they think MJ's music is weird - when I said that this was our special surprise activity for the day, they went completely crazy! My music students have been working very hard lately on all of their assignments - they deserved a special reward. It was great to dance with my students - even better that I could 'out-move' them.

4. Wrote a 'Congrats' note to a student who won an art award
I'm so proud of this student and have really started to get to know them this year. They are truly a gifted artist, well beyond the age of 13. Their favorite thing to do right now is either landscapes or portraits - but both she does beautifully. Anyway, she recently won an award from the state and I am so proud of her. Of course with the note I included a special candy treat. She also has a heart of gold too!

5. Wrote a text to another teacher wishing them safe travel
So a teacher in a nearby room leaves this weekend for a trip to Las Vegas - both business & pleasure related. She has been looking forward to this trip for awhile and has been anxious about this all week. I want her to have both a safe and enjoyable time away. I will miss her and await for her return - full of stories none the less!

5 Pennies - Day 146

1. Bought a snack for a teacher's assistant
She was doing such a great job in copying, sorting, and organizing paperwork for other teacher this morning in the workroom. Without a blink, she kindly looked at me and ask if she could help me with my work. Wow- rarely do I get this opportunity & I didn't want to blow it! So I showed her what I needed to get copied and how - she started right away and hummed the whole time. She was just happy in helping others. As I watched in amazement, I asked her what her favorite snack was. Then I went to the break room & bought it out of the vending area. When I gave it to her, she simply said that she wasn't being nice to get food - she just wanted to be nice. I replied that I wasn't being nice to get her to do my copying - I just wanted to be nice. With both smiled at the situation.

2. Gave out some silly pins to other staff members
So while I was getting my fancy birthday coffee the other day - the store had free pins in a little basket by the cash register. I asked the lady if it was alright if I grabbed a few for my other co-workers and she said - sure, take as many as you want. In a way I felt bad for taking 6, but I knew which co-workers would think that this was funny. So to make up for this feeling, I but an extra tip in the jar - sort of like a payment for the buttons. Well, I gave the buttons out today to the various coworkers, which they liked as plan. May favorite was the button that had a 'snowman' made out of whipped cream - it said 'whipped cream man'.

3. Wrote a 'Thank You' note to another teacher who took care of student problem while I was absent
I hate missing any time from school. I really like the majority of my music students and with the up coming holiday/winter concert season - time is essential. I also worry about those students that have a hard time with inconsistencies. These students may not be the most pleasant to be around, but sometimes they need me to be at school just be there - just to have the same routine in this unorganized & chaotic life. So when I am absent, these are the students that tend to fall apart on me - not because there is a substitute and they think that they can get away with something, but it is because I am not there to keep their schedule stable. I really worry about these kids the most whenever I'm absent.

4. Wrote 'Thank You' notes to other teachers who recently took their students on a field trip
It was a roller skating & bowling field trip that had every opportunity & potential for being harmful - but things were well organized. The students had such a wonderful experience! Basically this field trip was to reward those students who have been doing a good job in both their academic studies and their behavior. I know that there are great debates about extrinsic vs. intrinsic goals/rewards - but really, I think that the best thing for our students is a balanced mixture of both.

5. Complimented a male student in how he looked
Today was shadowing day with the 8th grade students. Many of the students were out of the building shadowing a family member or someone else in the community. A few stayed behind and shadowed a staff member at the school. Anyway, this particular male student normally dresses in t-shirt and jeans on his best days. So when he walked in the doors 'Dressed for Success' - in addition to have a big smile on his face - I just had to say something. To bad that the other 8th grade girls weren't at school today - they would have gone crazy over his look. By the end of the day, he was strutting around the school because of the many compliments that he received throughout his shadowing experience.

5 Pennies - Day 145

Ok- so today was my grandfather's burial service. I'm not much in the mood for talking or sharing. So I am going to keep things simple and to the point.

1. Made a special breakfast for my son.
Since I took the entire day off from school, I decided that what would make me feel better was to make a special breakfast for my son. I rarely get the opportunity because I leave for my school  before my mother takes him to his preschool. So today I made him special cinnamon twists - hot right from the oven. Basically it is croissants dipped into a cinnamon/sugar mixed - then baked.

2. Moved a tree branch out of the way during funeral
The pastor was walking to our gathering area and I noticed a medium sized tree branch laying in his path. I just simply bent down and moved it out of the way.

3. Bought hot chocolate for another customer
As I was heading home after the funeral I stopped by a convenience store because I needed something warm. As I stood in line ready to pay for my cup of coffee, I noticed that the person behind me was going to purchase a cup of hot chocolate. When it was my turn to pay I told the cashier that I was paying for mine and the person behind me. Then I turned to that person and wished them a good day.

4. Loaded up the copiers with paper at school
I also stopped by the school on my way home - I have a full band rehearsal the next day. I had to make a quick copy of something and noticed that both of the copiers were just about out of paper. Easy to fill it up for the other teachers for tomorrow morning.

5. Wrote a "Thank You" note to another teacher for listening
I was just having an emotional day and another teacher just gave me the opportunity to let it go.

5 Pennies - Day 144

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

1. Gave another teacher a birthday card
So I get to share my birthday with another teacher in my school. A few years back, the principal's birthday was at the end of the month too - so it was like our own special club. While I was growing up, I shared my birthday with my best friend, as well as another band student - but he was 2 years older than us. Again, we had our own special club - and would often share a birthday party because we all had similar friends. I can't remember a time that I haven't shared my birthday with someone. I like it this way.

2. Complimented on how another teacher looked
She had on a really nice outfit on and just looked so beautiful! Head to toe!

3. Shared my birthday cookie cake with others
So another teacher friend got me this really big chocolate chip birthday cookie cake type of thing. I am not one for sweets & desserts - so with this great big cake/cookie thing - I just had to share it with other teachers. Of course I shared it with some of my students too - they all loved it! It was nice to share this & my birthday with others.

4. Gave another student a bottle of water
This particular student has been having some behavioral issues within school, so the group of workout teachers decided to let him work out with us today. The funny thing is that he could barely keep up with us even though he is in fairly decent shape. However, he didn't have any water to drink. When you workout - you must hydrate - this is a must. So I ran and got him something. Overall the activity was like a bonding moment.

5. Bought a stranger a gourmet cookie
So even though I am not one for sweets & desserts, I admit that I do have a passion for flavored coffee. So I decided on my way to work this morning that after my after school workout I would treat myself to a special flavored coffee. I looked forward to this all day - aaaahhh flavored coffee :-) ! Then when it came time at the coffee store and I stood in line deciding what I wanted, I noticed a little gingergal cookie. I bought the coffee and the gingergal and began to look around. I noticed a woman a few steps from me just reading from her book. So I walked over and gave her the gingergal and said "Happy Birthday!" I knew that it wasn't her birthday and by the expression on her face she thought that I was completely nuts - well not completely :-) I don't eat sweets, but like I said throughout the day - it was nice to share this special day with someone else!

5 Pennies - Day 143

1. Took school newspapers in
Since the school was closed the past couple of days for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, there has been a pile up of newspapers. I just simply picked up the different piles of deliveries and brought them into the school library for the other teachers to use them as needed.

2. Made and brought in potato candy for another teacher
The tech ed teacher told me that she really loves potato candy, but can't find anyone in this area that makes it the traditional way. So as I was cleaning up after my family's thanksgiving meal, I put some mashed potatoes aside. My great aunt taught my mother this really great recipe for potato candy, who then has taught it to me. Again, I can't make a ham - but my potato candy is traditionally great! This particular teacher has been such a great help and really nice towards me lately.

3. Gave a teacher a coupon for a free oil change
Actually, it was for her collection of gifts that she has been putting together for local area needy families. This is the same teacher that I have mentioned before in an earlier penny - the one that I think is so great because she is doing this solely from her heart. So anyway, when I bought the toys for the car garage - the people gave me a coupon for a free oil change. Knowing that I can afford it myself, I figured that a family in need could use it more. Easy to do & easy to give.

4. Bought another teacher a candy bar to brighten her day
She seemed to be having a rough day, so I just wanted to do something nice for her - to show her that I cared. Chocolate has an amazing healing power that is more powerful than just to Harry Potter & the dementors. Ok, I'll take my geek hat off now! :-)

5. Helped pass out and gather materials for a school meeting
We had a presenter at school today during a staff meeting and as they were talking, I noticed that they were starting to stumble over their words as they were passing out materials - like trying to multi-task in doing both activities. Again, just something easy to do to help another person.

5 Pennies - Day 142

1. Hung up a "For Sale" sign
So I was walking my dog before church this morning, I noticed that the nearby house's "For Sale" sign unhook itself and now was laying on the ground. This house has been on sale for the past 9 months and by this action, I believe that even it thinks that it is never going to get sold. Although my hands were freezing cold and my dog desperately wanted to continue its walk - I just had to hang up the sign. To give the house, the original owners, and the Realtor some hope.

Oh, sometimes I give inanimate objects personal feelings. Maybe it is from watching too many kid movies with my son?

2. Prepared a Salvation Army Stocking for church
So every year the church asks its members to participate in a service project that will then benefit the local area children during this Holiday Season. Basically, we are given these large net stockings, an age group, and a label that says if it is going to go to a boy or a girl. We are then asked to fill it full toys and nicknacks for the child in need and then given a date to return them by. The stockings that are for the babies and toddlers are always the first to go. I always request stockings that are for the "10-12 boy" group - I like the challenge! I don't know if what I get is fun, but at least I am practicing for when my son turns this age - which seems very far away - he's 4.

3. Gave special school snacks to another church member
So there is a woman at church who works in a nearby school to me and started to talk about how crazy her teaching schedule has become lately. I can totally relate because December is a hectic Winter/Holiday Concert season for me. So I bought her some 'on the go snacks' that she can stash in the closet in her room and use them as needed. Reminds me, I need to buy some for myself. And yes for those that are wondering, they are high in protein/fiber and rather healthy snacks.

4. Gave some free samples of meds to other parents
So I needed to take my son for a re-check today at the pediatrician. Yes, I have a wonderful pediatrician who even has a few working hours on Saturday and Sunday. So as we were waiting in the office, I looked over the free medicine basket. There was all sorts of things there, but the best 'prize' was the cough syrup samples. There were 3 other parents waiting with their kids - did I tell you that I love my pediatrician for his weekend hours!- so I asked them which flavor that they wanted for their kids. At first they didn't understand what I was talking about until I showed them the basket. This free medicine basket is normally stocked every time I take my son, but is seldom utilized by other parents.

5. Helped another customer load water into his grocery cart
So after taking my son to the doctors for his re-check and learning that he needs a little more medicine to hopefully clear up this ongoing case of STREP, we stopped by the grocery store to fill the medicine & pick up some yogurt. As we were headed towards the line, I noticed this man trying to load a case of water into his cart. Ok, it was more like he was wrestling with the case of water as his cart decided to start rolling away from the scene. I discussed in a previous penny that I believe that carts secretly have brains - this only adds to my suspicion. So I simply held onto his cart as he finished his wrestling match with the water. It may have been an 'illegal move to tag team', but I just couldn't keep watching this guy as he got more and more frustrated. :-)

5 Pennies - Day 141

1. Bought a neighbor a special holiday treat
So for the past couple of days I have noticed that a neighbor down the way spending a lot of their free time outside starting to decorate their yard and their house for the up coming Holiday Season. As much as I detest the 'cutesy' lawn ornaments, I do really like how a house can be simply and tastefully decorated with a string of white lights. Sometimes simplicity is best! Anyway, it has been rather cold for this late autumn time - so I really appreciate that they made their house really attractive. Oh, by the way it was a M&M candy cane treat!

2. Wrote a "Thinking of You" card
This card was for a particular elderly church member that was recently hospitalized after breaking their hip. These types of stories get me every time. Just the thought that they are laying their in bed instead of being in their nice warm & cozy home - I just had to write a "Thinking of You" card - just to cheer them up - or at least myself.

3. Gave local business some toys for their Holiday Toy Drive
So as I was getting the oil change in my car at the garage shop today, I noticed that there was a box set up for people to donate toys. These toys will be then given to the Salvation Army to distribute throughout the holiday season to local families in need - similar to "Toys for Tots" program. Well, soon I found myself at the store buying some toys with my son to give to this shop/organization. He asked why we were buying extra toys and I was happy to share with him the explanation - mainly focusing on why it is important to help others. But most importantly I really liked sharing this penny with him.

4. Helped another woman carry food into a church service
Well, actually it was my friend's family memorial service. There were a lot of people that came to say goodbye - which in a way was nice to see how many people this particular person reached and how wonderfully she was loved by others. So as I was entering the church, I noticed this woman that was trying to walk with her cane and carrying in some dessert - while also trying to climb the front stares. It was easy to carry the food for her so that all she had to do was focus on the stairs. FYI - cherry cobbler.

5. Tidy up after a funeral service
The service, as sad as it was, was really beautiful and heartwarming. I know that the family was so honored in having such a large crowd that attended the service. Afterwards and as everyone was starting to leave, I noticed that there were some tissue packets and service programs still laying in the pews within the worship center. It was easy to help gather these items and put them on the back table for the ushers to take care of.

5 Pennies - Day 140

1. Returned an abandoned shopping cart
Yes, I believe that these things have minds of their own. I mean they are already mobile and I am pretty sure that they talk to each other when people aren't around. So who wouldn't blame them for wanting to be free and trying to escape. Sorry cart, not today!

2. Wrote a waiter a "Thank You" note
I took my son out for a special breakfast at our favorite restaurant. There was this waiter who was especially nice to us because our food was being delayed. He gave my son some extra rolls to pass the time. Again anytime you are nice to my kid, you earn major brownie points with me. So when it was time to pay the bill - I wrote this particular waiter a personal thank you with his tip.

3. Held the door open for another family
As my son and I were leaving the restaurant, there was another family coming in - An elderly woman, her daughter, and a stroller of a younger baby. The mother was sandwiched in between helping her mother and walker along with helper her baby with the stroller. The least that we could do is to hold the doors open - I with one and my son with the other. It's nice to have shared this penny with my son.

4. Made homemade cookies for another neighbor
There is a nice elderly neighbor down the way from our house that has this really cool hound-dog. He lives by himself and I am not for sure if he has any family around this area. So to wish him a good Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, my son and I made him cookies. Again, sharing the pennies with my son was really nice.

5. Gave cookies to bank tellers
So in the process of making our neighbor cookies, we also made enough to share 2 plates full of cookies for the bank tellers. As I took my son to the bank to deposit my checks from work, we gave them these cookie plates as a way to say "Thank you for working during this Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend." They couldn't believe that we did this nice gesture, but were really appreciative of the treats.

By the way - the cookies were chocolate chip - the really only type of cookie.

5 Pennies - Day 139

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

1. Sent an text message to another co-worker wishing them a Happy Birthday
So November must be a happening birthday month - I know at least 10 people that have their birthday during this time. Anyway, before we left for the break, this particular staff member told me that her family was probably going to forget her birthday because everyone will be celebrating Thanksgiving instead. She said that it was ok, but I could still tell that there was a sense of sadness in her tone. I have had this happen to me a couple of times too because yes, I am an ending November birthday as well. So I just wanted to send her a quick text so that she had someone wishing her a Happy Birthday - that someone remembered.

2. Made a family member her favorite dessert
Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake - I can't eat this because of the milk and it is too much for me, but I have been told that it is fantastic - so sure & of course I will make this dessert!

3. Checked on an elderly neighbor
I haven't seen the family members of my next door elderly neighbor yet this afternoon - which worries me some. I just went to go check in on her to make sure that she was ok and that she was taken care of for a Thanksgiving meal. I have plenty of food to share and she is more than welcome to attend!

4. Worked at a homeless shelter soup kitchen
So in the past I have given a lot of food for the homeless shelter soup kitchen, but I have always wanted to work in one. To meet the clients face to face. To see really how everything works and how everything is distributed. To give back. Fortunately, there was another teacher from school that annual volunteers for this service every Thanksgiving. Prior to this day, I asked her if I could join with her and her church group to help. Gladly she said yes! So we met up prior to the meal starting and I worked the evening with her, her husband, and some people that they knew from their church. It was a really nice experience that I hope to do again next year. Tiring, but extremely rewarding.

5. Sent a "Thank You" text
After working the homeless shelter soup kitchen I just needed to send a special text to this particular teacher in thanking them. I thanked them for letting me work with them at this church/community function. But more importantly, I thanked them for inspiring me to be a better person both inside and outside of our school.
